Water way to cut plastic pollution at Canary Wharf

Water way to cut plastic pollution at Canary Wharf

Canary Wharf Group has unveiled a range of free-to-use water fountains across its estate in East London.

To date, it has installed two out of seven planned machines, which it says are reducing the need for people shopping and working in the area to buy bottled water in single-use plastic containers.

The company has also deployed a number of plastic bottle and paper cup deposit return devices, which allow people to drop off rubbish to be recycled in exchange for a credit towards a future food or drink purchase.

The investments form part of a wider sustainability scheme to encourage the public to move to a more environmentally-friendly way of living, where resources are not simply created and consumed but become part of an ongoing lifecycle.

Martin Gettings, Group Head of Sustainability, said: "We've installed some water refill stations, the machine's been in for two weeks now and in that short space of time, we've effectively avoided the need for over a thousand plastic bottles."
