Liverpool’s Royal Liver Building gets energy efficient with green upgrade

A specialist in energy efficiency solutions has helped preserve a Grade I listed building in Liverpool.

BG Energy Solutions has completed a major plantroom project at the Royal Liver Building while avoiding the need for further refrigeration units on its rooftop, which would have jeopardised its listed status.

Mutual life, pensions and investment company Royal Liver Assurance Royal Liver originally built and moved in to the building upon its completion in 1911 - it has now had a new plantroom created in its basement, with heating and cooling equipment installed to feed a 7,500-litre thermal storage tank.

Pipework was then installed to allow new fan coil units within the building to utilise the storage tank and its circuits.

A new smart control system enables the site's temperature to be maintained between 20°C and 28°C, via a cooling-plate heat exchanger, the use of ambient air flows and an extension of the building's low temperature hot water pipework.
