Cruise operator sails past carbon reduction goals

A cruise operator has achieved its 25% carbon reduction goal three years ahead of schedule and is on track with its nine other 2020 sustainability goals.

Carnival Corporation has achieved a 26.3% reduction in carbon dioxide-equivalent emissions relative to a 2005 baseline.

It says measures that helped hit this goal included introducing exhaust gas cleaning systems across 62% of its fleet, which reduce sulfur compounds and particulate matter, as well as enabling 43% of its vessels to use shoreside electric power while the ship is docked.

The firm also rolled out advanced water purification systems to cut water usage, boosted recycling capabilities and sent 79% of its food waste to energy conversion plants.
