Government ‘must encourage LPG take-up in off-grid homes’

The government must set an end date for the burning of carbon-intensive fossil fuels in off-grid homes and businesses and encourage a shift to liquid petroleum gas (LPG).

That's the suggestion from UKLPG, the trade association for the LPG industry in the UK, in a series of five suggestions made to the government.

The organisation aims to highlight the role LPG can play in displacing high carbon fossil fuels in properties off the gas grid.

It also calls for an oil tank scrappage scheme to be implemented to help address the physical barrier to customers switching from heating oil and alleviate customer reluctance due to owning oil assets.

UKLPG says a government-backed initiative should support off-grid rural businesses with fair policies that enable them to make profit and allow heating engineers and installers to strengthen clear messaging to consumers.

It also advises conducting a review to make sure Energy Performance Certificates no longer disproportionately reflect fuel costs and take efficiency or carbon content into account.

UKLPG’s Public Affairs Manager Emily Wilson-Gavin said: "The LPG industry is poised to support the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy with its off-grid decarbonisation objectives with simple low cost solutions that deliver the reduction of carbon and other harmful pollutant emissions immediately."
