New 57.4MW Welsh wind farm powers up

A new 57.4MW onshore wind farm in Wales is now operational and exporting renewable electricity to the grid.

Brechfa Forest West consists of 28 turbines which are expected to generate enough power for 38,800 average UK homes.

Developer innogy Renewables said a community benefit fund, worth £459,200 a year, has also been launched.

Lesley Griffiths, Welsh Cabinet Secretary for Energy, Planning and Rural Affairs said she is “delighted” about the project, adding: “It is the most recent example of our approach to using Welsh Government estate to deliver benefits for Welsh people whilst at the same time decarbonising our energy system.

“I am pleased that the community fund will be delivered alongside the leisure improvements the development has funded, which are benefitting the local community and future generations.”

Recent research suggested building more onshore wind farms between 2019 and 2025 could help save consumers around £1.6 billion on their energy bills.
