More than 500k Brits switched electricity suppliers in May

Around half a million electricity customers switched suppliers in May.

That's a 13% rise compared to the same month last year and totals to around 2.3 million customers who transitioned between January and May 2018.

More than a third of the total switches last month involved customers moving from the Big Six to small and medium sized suppliers.

Lawrence Slade, Chief Executive of Energy UK said: “The latest figures show that more and more customers are saving money by switching - with the numbers increasing on last year, a record year in itself.

“Finding a better deal is quick and will bring you a lasting saving – simply either call your supplier or have a look to see what else is on offer from nearly 70 competing suppliers. And with the Energy Switch Guarantee in place, customers can be sure that the process will be simple, speedy and safe.”

Energy suppliers will be required to automatically compensate customers for any issues they face related to switching under new plans unveiled by Ofgem.
