Christmas energy bills worrying two million families

Christmas energy bills worrying two million families

More than two million families across the UK expect to struggle to pay their energy bills through the winter.

That's the suggestion from price comparison service uSwitch, which surveyed 2,011 households regarding the risk of suffering from fuel poverty over Christmas.

More than a quarter of those surveyed are worried they will have to sacrifice feeding their family (26%) or buying Christmas presents (27%) if they decide to turn the heating on over the festive season.

As many as 41% plan to ration their energy use and say they risk going cold this winter in a bid to make bills more affordable.

The survey highlights nearly a third of families aren’t aware of initiatives such as the Warm Home Discount that are available to offer assistance.

uSwitch says the government must to do more to help the most vulnerable and urges billpayers to check whether they could switch supplier and save money.

In the meantime it advises homeowners to save energy by bleeding radiators, switching devices off rather than onto standby and lowering the temperature on appliances like washing machines.
