SSEN outlines principles for DSO transition

Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) has published how it will transition from a Distribution Network Operator (DNO) to a Distribution System Operator (DSO).

The company has also launched a consultation regarding the move, intended to gather opinions on the best path of action and identify barriers to be overcome.

It aims to remove such barriers and empower local solutions to reduce losses, improve network utilisation, decarbonise and provide economic stimulus.

It has pledged to provide greater choice and opportunity for its customers, whilst ensuring the service it provides remains reliable, efficient and resilient.

The group aims to improve its decarbonisation, resilience and affordability credentials by listening to customer's needs and conducting its own performance evaluations.

SSEN says its transition must be co-ordinated and cost efficient, culminating in a flexible system that offers a level playing field for all technologies and solutions to engage with.

Head of DSO and Innovation, Stewart Reid, said: "The transition to a DSO will fundamentally change the way we manage our local electricity networks, providing exciting new opportunities for customers and other stakeholders to change the way in which we use and transact energy at a local level."
