Distributed energy ‘could save UK almost £1bn’

Distributed energy solutions could achieve almost £1 billion worth of energy savings each year.

That's the verdict from Centrica, which suggests wider adoption of these technologies could also deliver an £18.5 billion boost to the country’s overall economic growth.

The energy firm analysed the potential role of solutions like battery storage, onsite generation and energy efficiency devices in the industrial, healthcare and hospitality, hotel and leisure sectors, which represent more a quarter of the UK economy.

Assuming solutions would be deployed by half of organisations in these sectors, Centrica says the NHS could cut its £500 million energy bill by a fifth and claims the hospitality, hotel and leisure sector could save as much as £300 million.

The report also suggests gross value added across the UK from industry would be likely to hit almost £14 billion and as many as 260,000 jobs could be created.
