Sainsbury’s takes pole position for sustainability

Sainsbury’s is introducing Formula 1 inspired technology across the refrigerated aisles of its entire estate to slash energy consumption by up to 15%.

By working with the Williams F1 team to install the aerofoils, the supermarket expects to see energy reductions of 44 million kWh every year, equivalent to boiling 320 million kettles.

Whilst working to keep the fridges of cheese, yoghurts and meats cold, the technology will also help to keep the aisles up to 4°C warmer for the shop's customers by preventing cold air from the fridges spilling out into the aisle and steering it back down into the unit.

It works in a similar way to Formula 1 spoilers redirecting air flow around the cars.

Paul Crewe, Head of Sustainability, Sainsbury’s, said: "By looking outside of our industry and borrowing technology from an industry that is renowned for its speed and efficiency, we are accelerating how we are reducing the impact on the environment whilst making shopping in Sainsbury’s stores a more comfortable experience."
