The Queen visited Siemens Gamesa’s offshore wind turbine blade manufacturing factory in Hull yesterday.
She was given a short tour of the facility and a demonstration of the work which goes into making the mammoth 75-metre turbine blades, as part of the Hull City of Culture 2017 celebrations.
They are handmade as a single, unbroken section before being shipped out from the three-berth dock on the Humber estuary.
The Queen saw how renewable energy is used in practice in a ‘Greenpower’ car. The project aims to inspire young people into a career in engineering by building and racing electric cars.
She was also introduced to employees, including apprentices, working on the blades under construction.
Her Majesty unveiled a plaque at the renewable factory to mark the day of her visit.
Trade body RenewableUK said the Queen's visit highlights "how far offshore wind has come".
