German supermarket METRO to make solar savings

A German wholesaler has teamed up with E.ON to launch what it says is one of the largest solar and storage rooftop systems in the country.

METRO Cash & Carry Deutschland will work with the supplier to install the renewable energy equipment on the roofs of 30 of its buildings, enabling it to generate its own clean power and save up to 12,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year.

The project will begin at METRO locations in Mannheim and Gundelfingen, as well as in Regensburg, Nuremberg-Buch and Nuremberg-Eibach.

The plants will produce a total of up to 20GWh per year, which could supply around 9% of the company's total electricity requirements while helping it stabilise energy costs and achieve its target of halving carbon emissions by 2030.
