Largest onshore wind farm in Wales officially open

The largest onshore wind farm in Wales has officially been opened.

The Pen y Cymoedd Wind Energy Project has a capacity of 228MW and will be capable of meeting the power needs of more than 13% of homes.

It is also expected to reduce emissions by 300,000 tonnes every year.

Developer Vatenfall said around 52% of the £400 million investment has gone to Welsh businesses.

Welsh First Minister Carwyn Jones added: “Wind power is a key part of our efforts to build a sustainable low carbon economy for Wales. I am pleased we were able to support this project, which has shown how the local community, the Welsh economy and people right across the country can benefit from such a scheme.”

The Welsh Government has set a target to generate 70% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030.
