CHP could give Europe extra 120GW of energy

Combined heat and power (CHP) installations could provide Europe with up to an additional 120GW of energy.

That's according to advocacy group COGEN Europe, which says cogeneration from a hybrid facility can result in massive savings and reduced emissions.

It says realising this opportunity will be instrumental to reaching the EU’s strategic climate and energy goals, while creating jobs and boosting competitiveness.

The group suggests interactions between all energy carriers should be considered and improved, including the flexibility potential provided by heat networks, gas grids and the transport sector.

It also highlights the need to ensure existing CHP investments are not at risk of decommissioning and to guarantee grid access for new projects.

The group says CHP network tariff structures need to be transparent, cost-reflective and non-discriminatory, based on real use of the grid.
