Scotland provides £1.8m for hot new geothermal

Scotland’s first deep geothermal district heating network has been allocated £1.8 million of grant funding by the government.

The HALO Kilmarnock development in the West of Scotland will feature a 2,000-metre deep geothermal well, from which hot water will be extracted using a small pump.

It is due to be drilled in 2018.

The heat from the water will be transferred to a new mixed-use development on the site of the former Johnnie Walker bottling plant in Kilmarnock.

The facility will be made up of an Innovation and Enterprise Centre, social housing, office space and leisure facilities.
