New EU rules to prevent gas supply crises

The European Parliament has approved new co-operation rules aimed at preventing potential gas supply crises.

An EU country facing an emergency gas shortage will be able to alert another member state and trigger cross-border assistance.

Improvements to the rules include the introduction of a solidarity principle, closer regional co-operation and greater transparency.

Miguel Arias Cañete, Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy said: “With the new rules, we are better equipped to prevent and handle gas crises. This makes us more effective, secures our energy supply and reduces costs for consumers.”

The revised regulation will come into force 20 days after it has been published in the Official Journal of the European Union.
