District heating network to supply £6bn development

District heating network to supply £6bn development

A new district heating network in London will help supply a £6 billion business and housing development.

Sustainable energy system provider Vital Energi is delivering the project on behalf of Enfield Council's own energy company, energetik.

It will design, build, operate and maintain the main energy centre for the Meridian Water development and install the district heating network over the next 12 years, under a contract worth £15 million.

This heat network is part of an £85 million integrated energy and regeneration strategy in Enfield that will interconnect with other networks at Arnos Grove and Ponders End.

It will eventually supply cost effective, low carbon heating to 30,000 homes and businesses.

Vital Energi and energetik say they hope to improve the reputation of district heating to ensure customers receive a quality service in what is a currently unregulated market.

The overall project is expected to eventually provide £225 million of economic, environmental and social benefits to the Enfield area, create a raft of new jobs and help buildings slash their carbon footprint by 80%.

This will help the local council achieve its target of cutting carbon emissions in the borough by 40% before 2020.
