BP ups the heat on carbon offsets with green stoves

BP is funding a number of projects to reduce cook-stove emissions in an expansion of its carbon offsetting programme.

By expanding its Target Neutral portfolio, the energy giant claims it will reduce up to 2.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions per year and improve the lives of more than two million people.

The projects, which were selected using the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals as a framework for assessment, are based in India, Peru, China and Mexico.

They will focus on helping low-income households obtain improved cook-stoves that burn more efficiently and evacuate smoke from the home through a chimney, each reducing an average of 3.3 tonnes of emissions annually.

The firm says this will be achieved by either significantly reducing the amount of wood or kerosene currently used or replacing these polluting feedstocks with biogas.

The projects will also include activities such as forest conservation, energy efficiency and renewable power.

Andrea Abrahams, Global Director of BP Target Neutral, said: "Increasing numbers of businesses are implementing carbon management strategies which allow them to target top-line growth, business efficiency and brand enhancement with measurable and material impacts.

"BP is proud to provide our customers and their businesses with opportunities to not only offset their carbon emissions but also help to bring people out of poverty."
