‘Tackling energy price issues is a priority’ says Which?

Tackling rising energy prices should be one of the next government's main priorities.

That's according to a new report from a consumer group, which says political parties should use the forthcoming election to address a range of critical consumer issues.

In a recent Which? survey, 51% of respondents said taking action on energy prices, which have gone up more than 40% for gas and 35% for electricity over the last 10 years, was a priority.

The consumer body said it wants to see the next government provide a clear position on energy market competition, ensuring interventions will have an end date, do not lead to higher overall prices and don't stifle performance or innovation.

Peter Vicary-Smith, Which? CEO, said: "The next government must take this opportunity to address the issues that matter most to the public, committing to reforming essential markets so that they work better for customers.

"Only then will it maintain consumer confidence and ensure a thriving economy as Britain prepares to leave the European Union."

Despite this, some say the energy policy debate in the run up to the general election should be about more than just tariffs.

Small green energy supplier Bulb has bucked the price rise trend and announced a price cut.
