Adidas kicks off ocean plastic recycling with new kits

Adidas has created a series of football shirts made from ocean plastic.

In collaboration with eco-group Parley for the Oceans, the sports clothing giant produced the shirts for four Major League Soccer teams in the US.

The upcycled marine plastic used to construct the jerseys is collected by Parley clean-up operations in coastal areas of the Maldives and reworked into technical fibers.

New York City FC, Orlando City, LA Galaxy and Seattle Sounders will sport the club kits in upcoming matches this month.

Cyrill Gutsch, Founder of Parley for the Oceans, said: "Every second breath we take is generated by the oceans. And still, we are at war with the sea."

"Now is the time to negotiate peace with our life support and to invent our way out of this mess. Soccer can lead the way. It shows what we can achieve with the right balance of creativity, collaboration and technology."

A recent survey suggests none of the six largest global soft drinks brands have plans to cut the amount of single-use plastic bottles they use.
