UK Government confirms retail water market will open in April

The UK Government has confirmed the retail water market will open as planned on 1st April.

That’s means more than 1.2 million eligible businesses, charities and public sector organisations in England will be able to choose who they pay for their retail water and wastewater services.

According to official figures, the open market is estimated to deliver up to £200 million worth of benefits to the economy and customers, including better service and choice.

Environment Secretary Andrea Leadsom said: “It’s great news over a million businesses – be that a car wash, factory or supermarket – will be able to find the best water deal that works for them from 1st April.

“Opening the market is an historic milestone and it’s right this government is giving companies the same choice over their water retailer as they currently have for energy and other services.”

Water regulator Ofwat is consulting on its proposed principles for voluntary codes of conduct for third party intermediaries (TPIs) in the business water retail market.
