‘No nuclear risk’ after fire at EDF plant in France

‘No nuclear risk’ after fire at EDF plant in France

There are no casualties and no risk of contamination after a fire occured at a nuclear power plant in northern France.

EDF said the fire at Flamanville 1 was in a “non-nuclear area” in an engine room and was immediately brought under control.

Production unit 1 was disconnected automatically from the power grid following the fire.

EDF said in a statement: “The fire was extinguished by the teams of the power station and confirmed extinguished by the fire brigade. No casualties were reported. This event had no impact on the safety of the facilities or the environment. Production unit No. 2 is in production.”

A third new generation reactor, EPR, is being built at Flamanville and is expected to be the world’s largest when it starts operating next year.

The reactor design is the same as the one planned for Hinkley Point C in Somerset, which will be the UK’s first new nuclear power station in a generation.
