IKEA cooks up a sustainable kitchen

IKEA has released a new kitchen range made from recycled bottles and wood.

The sustainable KUNGSBACKA kitchen fronts are mostly made of reclaimed wood, which is then coated with plastic from around 25 half-litre polyethylene therephalate (PET) bottles.

Normally, around 70% of these PET bottles aren't recycled and commonly end up as waste in landfills - IKEA will use them to replace 'virgin oil' based plastic which is harmful to the environment.

IKEA has a big impact on the environment due to the large quantities and nature of what it produces - it plans to become more sustainable without compromising on quality, design or price.

David Vine, IKEA UK & Ireland Kitchens Business Leader said: "The new range is a start in turning everyday waste into beautiful furniture. At IKEA we are very conscious of the impact of waste, knowing that plastic bottles take up to 1,000 years to decompose."

The green production method is set to be a big contributor to IKEA’s sustainability agenda, with a number of future products already set to feature the recycled coating.

IKEA UK reported a number of sustainability successes in the 2016 financial year.
