Anglian Water to pay £100k for pollution

Anglian Water to pay £100k for pollution

Anglian Water has agreed to pay £100,000 to a social enterprise following a pollution incident in Peterborough.

River Nene Regional Park, which aims to create a green infrastructure network of environmental projects from Daventry to Peterborough, will receive the money.

In May 2013, storm tanks at Anglian Water’s Flag Fen Water Recycling Centre (WRC) overflowed, discharging untreated sewage into the Counter Drain.

As it was not a case of severe pollution, the Environment Agency decided to agree to a civil sanction, under which the water company offered to make a donation to the social enterprise.

The cash will allow the organisation to employ a River Restoration Officer. Anglian Water also paid more than £13,000 in costs to the Environment Agency.

The water company said it aims to have "zero pollution" in its activities.

A spokesperson added: "We take our responsibilities to the environment very seriously and payments like this make a real difference locally rather than going into central government coffers.

"Our goal is zero pollution and we are carefully managing our network to get closer and closer to this. It's not perfect though and when things go wrong we accept responsibility quickly and offer to contribute to put it right."
