Leading firms call on UK Government to back green goals

A total of 84 leading firms have called on the government to back international green goals.

The companies, which include HSBC, IKEA and Unilever, penned a letter to British Prime Minister Theresa May, asking for it to commit to the UN's Sustainable Development Goals.

The companies say green development is essential to the long-term prosperity and wellbeing of future generations and that they are ready to get behind the targets.

They are urging the government to demonstrate to businesses its commitment to deliver the SDGs in the UK and to work with them to create a transparent reporting framework, clear benchmarks and a delivery plan.

The request comes a day ahead of the World Economic Forum's (WEF) annual meeting, running from the 17th to the 20th of January, where talks will centre around the transition to a sustainable economy.

Juliet Davenport, Founder and CEO of Good Energy, said: "The Sustainable Development Goals give us a universal framework to ensure that everyone committed to sustainability is singing from the same hymn sheet.

"They're not about overseas development; they're about sustainability everywhere. And to give the SDGs their best chance of success in the UK, we need a clear and concrete demonstration from government that it has embraced the goals."

ELN has contacted the government for a statement.
