Australian Senate calls for coal-fired plants closure

The Australian Senate is calling for a closure of all coal-fired plants in the country.

In a report, backed by both Labor and Green members of the Environment and Communications References Committee, it has recommended the Australian Government to create a comprehensive energy transition plan in line with the Paris Agreement.

It also suggests the government to work in consultation with industry, community, union and other stakeholders to develop a mechanism for the orderly retirement of coal-fired power stations.

Countries such as Canada, France and Finland have recently pledged to phase out coal by 2030.

In the UK the government has launched a consultation to test its plans to close all coal-fired plants by 2025.
