US awards $29m for geothermal energy

Funding worth $29 million (£21.9m) has been awarded for geothermal energy in the US.

Two teams at Sandia National Laboratories and the University of Utah will use the cash for the third phase of the Frontier Observatory for Research in Geothermal Energy (FORGE).

Enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) are the means by which resources are accessed from deep beneath the surface of the earth where there are hot rocks for geothermal wells and naturally occurring liquid to generate steam.

According to the Energy Department, investing in EGS technologies today could eventually lead to more than 100GW of electric generating capacity in the US.

Franklin Orr, Under Secretary for Science and Energy said: “Enhanced Geothermal Systems can help us tap into a vast energy resource with the potential to generate enough clean energy to power millions of homes.

“In supporting this technology, the FORGE programme is advancing American leadership in clean energy innovation and could ultimately help us meet our climate and sustainability goals.”
