Rio’s Olympic rings get gold for sustainability

The six metre tall Olympic rings on Rio's Copacabana beach are made of recycled plastic bottles.

Dutch refillable plastic bottle manufacturer Dopper is behind the construction of the six by three metre decorative Olympic rings by the Beach volleyball courts. The firm claims it's helping to reduce the rapidly growing volume of plastic waste around the globe.

The collaboration between Dopper and Rio de Janeiro is intended to underline the city’s sustainability ambitions, which have already emerged as a major theme of the Olympic Games.

The rings will remain where they are until the end of August, when thye will be moved to the renowned Maracanã Stadium. Dopper is also making rings for the upcoming Paralympic Games.

And according to the company, the Japanese capital Tokyo will possibly use the rings at their Olympic Games in 2020.
