Writing on Twitter this morning, he said: "Time for climate change and industrial policy to be brought together more closely. Look forward to working on it."

He added the climate change brief was a "welcome opportunity to reconnect with the issue I chose to focus on when I entered Parliament".

Energy Secretary Greg Clark's ministerial team is going to be busy in coming months, delivering an emission reduction plan, supporting a government review of Hinkley Point, delivering the national smart meter roll out and fleshing out a new industrial strategy.

Baroness Neville-Rolfe will support him as the Minister of State for Energy and Intellectual Property.
