The European Commission has found French plans to support a tidal energy plant to be in line with state aid rules.
The NEPTHYD (Normandie Energie PiloTe HYDrolien) project in Raz Blanchard, in the English Channel, will serve as a demonstration plant for the developing technology.
An ENGIE subsidiary will build and operate the plant, which will consist of four 1.4MW turbines and will be connected to the national power grid.
Those turbines will demonstrate several innovative features that are expected to significantly increase performance, such as upgraded blades and electronics.
France will support construction through a direct grant and repayable advances, which will be reimbursed if the technology proves successful. Each unit of energy produced will also receive a Feed-in Tariff.
Support has been authorised as the project will promote renewable electricity production in line with EU energy and climate goals without distorting competition.
