The Dubai Supreme Council of Energy has launched a strategy to boost the use of hybrid and electric vehicles (EV) by 2020.
The ‘Dubai Green Mobility’ initiative aims to ensure at least 2% of new cars sold in the next four years are low emissions vehicles.
It is set to increase to 10% by 2030.
The initiative also aims to contribute to a 16% reduction in carbon emissions duing the same period.
Ahmed Buti Al Muhairbi, Secretary General of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy said: "The market for hybrid and electric vehicles will promote the use of sustainable transport and encourage the use of environmentally-friendly vehicles by all citizens and residents in Dubai."
According to the World Energy Council, EV sales boost is "vital to closing emissions gap".
