US, Canada, Mexico to source 50% of power from clean energy by 2025

The governments of the US, Canada and Mexico are to announce a commitment to produce 50% of their energy from clean sources.

Barack Obama, Justin Trudeau and Enrique Peña Nieto aim to achieve the goal by 2025.

The pledge, which is set to be made as part of a summit of the North American leaders in Ottawa this week, will include the use of hydropower, wind, solar, nuclear plants, carbon capture and storage as well as energy efficiency measures.

Currently 37% of all of North America's power comes from non-emitting sources, according to the US Government.

Brian Deese, Senior Adviser to President Barack Obama on environmental and energy told reporters: “We believe this is an aggressive goal but one that is achievable by all three countries."
