Ofgem approves Scotland-Norway power link

An electricity interconnector linking Scotland and Norway has been given the green light by Ofgem.

The regulator said it has granted a licence to Norwegian consortium NorthConnect, which plans to build a £1.3 power cable between Boddam in Aberdeenshire and Eidfjord in Norway.

The 650-kilometre long interconnector has a capacity of 1.4GW - enough to meet 25% of Scottish peak demand.

The news comes after Aberdeenshire Council granted permission to build an electricity converter station and underground cables for the project last year.

It is scheduled to start operating from 2022.
