Work begins on Siemens’ €200m German turbine factory

Construction of the €200 million (£158.5m) Siemens wind turbine factory in Cuxhaven, Germany has started.

The site is forecast to be completed by mid-2017 and production of the 7MW offshore wind turbines will start shortly after.

This will coincide with the start of manufacturing of the 75-metre rotor blades at the new plant in Hull, UK.

The German facility's location on the edge of the harbour will mean that expensive ground transportation costs can be avoided by shipping directly to the offshore wind farm for assembly.

Günter Willbold, Head of Siemens Real Estate Germany, said: “The offshore industry is key to the success of Germany's energy transition."

The site will cover an area of 170,000 square metres – a surface comparable to the size of 24 football fields.  It also includes offices, a canteen and a technological building.
