Nike unveils ‘most sustainable distribution centre’

One of Nike’s distribution centres in Belgium will be powered 100% by renewable sources.

The firm, which is part of the RE100 initiative, announced the expansion of its European Logistics Campus which will receive electricity from six wind turbines that will generate enough energy to power 5,000 homes.

The site will also be powered by solar, geothermal, hydroelectric and biomass sources.

More than 95% of waste generated will be recycled on site and transportation routes to and from the centre will be optimised to reduce carbon emissions by 30%, Nike added.

The facility will also have LED lighting installed which will help reduce electricity costs and its environmental impact.

Bert Stevens, Vice President of Supply Chain Operations Nike Europe said: "Our facilities in Belgium are a pinnacle example of how sustainable innovation is embedded into Nike’s growth strategy, which enables us to maximise our performance while minimising our footprint. The success of this expansion is a result of excellent teamwork, with great co-operation from local and national governments and support from many partners and the local community."
