Ban Ki-moon: Climate action must be taken to the next level

It is time to take climate action "to the next level".

The comment was made by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon during a speech at the 'Climate Action 2016' conference in Washington yesterday.

He said: “We need to accelerate the speed, scope and scale of our response, locally and globally.”

The two-day event aims to strengthen the multi-stakeholder approach to climate implementation, focusing on six, high-value areas including sustainable energy and land use, cities, transport and tools for decision-making.

The conference is taking place two weeks after more than 170 countries signed the Paris Agreement, which aims is to limit global temperature rise to well below 2°C.

The Secretary-General added: “I have been looking forward to this event because it is about solutions, innovation, imagination, collaboration and partnerships between the public and private sectors. Today as never before, the stars are aligning in favour of climate action. Everywhere I look, I see signs of hope.

“No sector of society and no nation can succeed alone. I encourage you to collaborate. Innovate. Invest. Together we can build the world we want."

Earlier this week, Mr Ki-moon nominated new UN environment and climate chiefs.
