Conservative MPs call on PM to support fifth carbon budget

Conservative MPs call on PM to support fifth carbon budget

A total of 20 Conservative MPs are calling on Prime Minister David Cameron to support the adoption of a fifth carbon budget.

The letter sent to the PM follows the Committee on Climate Change's (CCC) recommendation to set a carbon budget which includes cutting emissions from international shipping.

The suggestion has also been supported by the Energy and Climate Change Committee.

The MPs believe the measure would ensure the nation benefits from the growth in global low carbon investment.

They added: "Following the historic outcome of the Paris climate conference, the shift to low carbon technology in transport, buildings and energy markets is accelerating again. The UK played a pivotal role in the agreement and we now need to make sure that we attract the greatest possible investment in UK low and zero carbon infrastructure with the supply chain and employment benefits this can bring.

"The CCC’s advice is tailored to meeting our carbon obligations at the lowest possible cost and with the highest ancillary gains. Early and full acceptance of that advice will give investors and government the confidence to act and so maintain this government’s proud record of lower emissions combined with sustained economic growth."

Last week DECC said it is considering the advice of the CCC and will set the fifth carbon budget “in due course”.

ELN has contacted the Prime Minister's Office for a statement.
