Protesters target Welsh coal mine

Protesters target Welsh coal mine

A group of environmental campaigners protested at a coal mine in Wales yesterday.

Under the 'Reclaim The Power' campaign, more than 300 people gathered at the Ffos-y-fran mine to halt operations while protesting against fossil fuels.

Neil Brown, Managing Director at Miller Agent which runs the site said supporting the steel industry, affordable electricity and climate change are "all important issues".

He added: "What we need is a sensible debate that supports jobs in Wales, Welsh Coal is an important part of this. The UK Carbon Tax is over five times of that in Europe, no wonder companies like TATA are losing money."

The action was part of more protests globally, all targeting major fossil fuel infrastructures in 13 countries.

Called “Break Free” the campaign will last 12 days when different actions will be taken in Brazil, Australia, Canada, Germany, Ecuador, Indonesia,  New Zealand, Nigeria, Philippines, South Africa, Turkey and the US.

May Boeve, Executive Director 350.org said: "By backing campaigns and mass actions aimed at stopping the world’s most dangerous fossil fuel projects – from coal plants in Turkey and the Philippines, to mines in Germany and Australia, to fracking in Brazil and oil wells in Nigeria – Break Free hopes to eliminate the power and pollution of the fossil-fuel industry and propel the world toward a sustainable future."
