RWE to reduce operations at UK coal-fired plant

RWE to reduce operations at UK coal-fired plant

RWE npower has announced it will reduce energy generation operations at one of its coal-fired plants in the UK.

The Aberthaw Power Station will be focused on ensuring capacity is available at times of stress and during colder periods from April 2017.

RWE also stated the new operating regime at theĀ 1,500MW plant will help reduce emissions and increase fuel diversity.

It added the decision comes as the current market for energy generation remains "extremely challenging" and demand for coal generation in the coming years "is expected to be low compared to recent times".

The news follows the UK Government's annoucenment to close all coal-fired power plants by 2025.

Richard Little, Aberthaw Power Station Manager said: "When market conditions are very difficult it is testament to the hard work and dedication of our people that we can adapt the station to ensure that it continues to play a key role into the future."
