Derbyshire firm fined £370k for steaming waste

A waste company has been fined £370,000 for breaching environmental permits.

Between March 2012 and June 2013, Donald Ward Limited failed to control the amount of waste stored in its sites at Griffon Road and Hallam Fields in Derbyshire, according to the Environment Agency.

Waste brought onto the Griffon Road site was stored for longer than permitted and odorous nature of some of them resulted in a fly infestation.

The waste stored at Hallam Fields Road posed a fire risk.

Despite the number of opportunities the firm was given to improve its operations, it failed to bring the sites back into compliance, the Environment Agency added.

It also operated an illegal waste site at Old Stanton Iron works in the same region from February to July 2013.

When officers visited, one of the waste piles appeared to be steaming.

An Environment Agency officer said: "We grant, monitor and enforce waste permits so that we can ensure that waste operations do not pollute the environment and pose a risk to human health. Donald Ward Limited failed to comply with their environmental permit despite multiple warning letters and enforcement notices issued by the Environment Agency.

"This prosecution demonstrates that we take cases such as this very seriously and will not hesitate to prosecute if necessary, to protect the environment and local communities."
