Isle of Wight’s tidal energy centre approved

An application for a grid-connected tidal energy development off the Isle of Wight coast has been approved.

The Marine Management Organisation (MMO) has given the green light for the construction and development of the offshore site which is expected to generate and export up to 30MW of electricity.

It could power more than 15,000 homes.

Upon construction, the 2km Perpetuus Tidal Energy Centre may export energy generated into the electricity network via an onshore substation, the MMO added.

Earlier this month tidal energy company Atlantis announced a partnership with an investment firm to boost these source of power in Scotland.
