US funds small businesses to develop green tech

The US has announced it will provide small businesses $300,000 (£204,000) to develop environmental technologies.

The money from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will be given through eight contracts under the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Programme.

They will be awarded to those businesses which previously submitted research proposals for their innovative technologies.

Some of the projects include developing a filtration device to control emerging contaminants in drinking water supplies and a system to produce biofuel from grease trap waste.

A technology to drive energy savings in commercial buildings and a high efficiency filter technology to remove pollutants from indoor air were also chosen.

Thomas A. Burke, EPA’s Science Advisor and Deputy Assistant Administrator of EPA’s Office of Research and Development said: “The green technologies that these SBIR companies are developing will help us address some of today’s most pressing environmental and public health issues."
