Vietnam to phase out coal

Vietnam has unveiled its power plans for 2030 which include stopping the construction of coal-fired power plants.

The country’s Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said they will invest in gas and renewables to ensure the nation’s power supply and achieve its commitments at  COP21.

The announcement contradicts the nation's plan last year to add “substantial” coal-fired capacity to the system.

Vietnam's Primer Minister asked members of the cabinet for a new power programme which guarantees sufficient power supply and meets “international commitments on cutting emissions".

The government will also develop nuclear “in conformity with laws effectively and safely".

In November, the UK announced it will close coal-fired power plants by 2025.
