Santander banks on LEDs to halve energy use

Santander is to replace all its lighting with LEDs, thanks to a £17.5 million fund.

The UK Green Investment Bank (GIB) and Sustainable Development Capital Limited (SDCL) are investing the cash in what is believed to be the nation’s largest fully-funded LED retrofit programme.

More than 90,000 energy-saving lights will be installed across Santander’s 800 branches and 14 office buildings.

The project is expected to reduce the bank’s energy use by around 50% and cut greenhouse gas emissions by more than 7,000 tonnes every year.

Energy Secretary Amber Rudd said: “We need research, innovation and serious private sector interest in clean energy technology to make real progress in transition to a global low carbon economy. The LED lighting retrofit project is a great example of steps that can be taken by companies to cut greenhouse gas emissions.”

SDCL will provide lighting services, designed and delivered by GE Lighting, for 10 years.
