Research launched to make airports more environmentally friendly

Scotland has launched a research which will look into how to make rural airports more environmentally friendly.

The €2.4 million (£1.7m) European funded project brings together a range of public authorities, academic institutions, airports, small businesses and specialists from Scotland, Sweden, Norway and Ireland.

The 'Smart Peripheral and Remote Airports 2020' (SPARA) aims to encourage the use of innovative technologies to make them cost effective and environmentally friendly as possible.

The project, led by the Highlands and Islands Strategic Transport Partnership (HITRANS), will last three years.

Scottish Minister for Transport Derek Mackay said: "The project will look at how we make remote and rural airports more environmentally friendly, investigating new and innovative measures to reduce their carbon footprint."
