Director of a company fined £14k for illegal waste

The director of a waste treatment company has been ordered to pay £14,000 for illegal waste activity in Manchester.

Tony Cash from Birch Skip Hire Limited also has to pay £7,000 for the costs of breaching the environmental permitting regulations.

According to the Environment Agency (EA), the amount of waste recovered at one of its two sites in Manchester was 16,000 tonnes – 80 times more than the permitted limit.

Excessive waste levels resulted in a number of permit breaches with a risk of serious pollution at both sites, the EA added.

The company and director imported an excessive amount of waste on to the sites and failed to comply with enforcement and suspension notices regarding the removal of the waste.

Gordon Whitaker, Environment Manager at the EA said: "These charges send out a strong message to waste offenders that environmental crime can lead to serious enforcement action in the criminal courts and where appropriate individual directors of companies holding environmental permits will be held accountable."
