Amber Rudd calls on Big Six to cut energy bills

Energy Secretary Amber Rudd said she will continue pressing the Big Six to reduce their energy bills.

Ms Rudd added although wholesale prices have stayed down she would like to see "more progress" from the energy giants in order to help homes save money on gas and electricity.

She also encourages householders to switch suppliers to secure better deals for their energy bills.

Ms Rudd added: "I will continue to press the energy companies and continue to talk to them about the impact of lower wholesale prices on the bill. On the average bill, it's about 46% of the cost - so there are some costs which aren't going down, which are actually going up, so we have to bear that in mind."

New figures from the government revealed 11 million householders still stand to save £200 or more by moving to a different gas and electricity provider.
