Cash for councils to boost e-waste recycling
Local councils are being invited to bid for a share of up to £775,000 to help boost the recycling of unwanted electrical items.
The cash has been made available by retailers, suppliers and manufacturers of electrical equipment.
They are part of the Distributor Take-back Scheme (DTS) and the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Compliance Fee, which requires businesses to fund the collection and recycling of the technologies they put on the market.
The initiatives aim to support local projects to encourage the collection, re-use and recycling of unwanted whole appliances.
Business Minister Anna Soubry said: “We have around £1 billion worth of electrical equipment in our homes which we no longer use but which still has real value.
“This business-led fund can help drive up levels of collection, re-use and recycling of unwanted electrical equipment. The fund will also help divert electrical waste from landfill and reduce waste by promoting the re-use of electrical appliances.”
Project proposals must be submitted to the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) by 30th October.
