US laboratory wins environmental award

US laboratory wins environmental award

A US laboratory has won a green award for reducing waste and energy use.

The University of Chicago's Argonne National Laboratory bagged the Federal Green Challenge prize.

The competition encourages federal agencies in the country to conserve energy and resources, cut waste, reduce pollution and save money.

The laboratory has been recognised for using computers and electronics with energy efficient features, hybrid and electric vehicles (EVs) and increasing food composting.

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which revealed the winner, claims participants saved taxpayers more than $24 million (£15.3m) by diverting around 390,000 tons of solid waste from landfills in 2014.

They also helped save nearly 80 million gallons of water, sent 450 tons of old electronics to recyclers and cut the use of office paper by 15,000 pounds.
