Cornwall makes waves in renewables sector

Trials for a wave energy converter began this month off the coast of Cornwall.

The prototype called Volta was designed by UK-based firm PolyGen at an energy test site FaBTest in Falmouth.

The area has a Marine Licence for testing new technologies on site. The deployment and mooring of the device was carried out by local engineers, Mojo Maritime.

Rob Eavis, Business Development Manager, PolyGen, said: “We are now busy studying the already encouraging performance data and really looking forward to some winter storms coming through.”

The Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Local Enterprise Partnership invested £549,000 in the project.

An Israeli wave energy firm recently raised $2 million (£1.3m) of funds to build a pipeline for its wave technology.
